The GJ9 Cleaning Head Cleans Tomato And Cheese 10x Faster

Innovative design removes residue from even the hardest-to-reach areas.

The Client

Our client is a food manufacturer, based in the Midlands. Their operations use large amounts of tomato puree and cheese, which are stored and transported in IBCs.

The Challenge

Food manufacturers’ hygiene standards are audited constantly, and IBCs storing raw products are no exception. With over 20 to clean a day, our client was having to make the decision to either clean or replace their IBCs, depending on the level of build-up.

Up until this point, IBCs were being manually cleaned using a high pressure hand-held lance, and this process was becoming increasingly labour-intensive, with each taking over 45 mins to complete. Angling the lance through an IBC’s restricted inlet opening made cleaning tomato and cheese residue from the upper roof and top corners extremely difficult. In fact, in many cases it was proving completely impossible and the only option was to replace the container entirely.

The Solution

The IBC WashStation with an Alfa Laval GJ9 Rotary Jet Head offered the client a 100% repeatable 360° clean. The WashStation is a plug and play system which offers a simple solution for IBC cleaning, and can be used as a mobile or fixed system depending on the user’s setup.

With the high impact generated by the GJ9 cleaning head, the residue can be removed easily from all IBCs. The rotary head is designed to target the upper roof and corners, ensuring even the most difficult-to-reach areas are fully cleaned, allowing the IBCs to be reused and greatly reducing the expenditure on buying replacements.

Our client had always wanted to add caustic cleaning solutions to the cleaning process but as the IBC’s were being cleaned manually, this would have posed a health and safety risk to their operatives. With the fully automated WashStation, operatives can now set the required cycle and leave the IBC until cleaning is complete. This dramatically reduces labour costs and frees up the operative to be involved in other aspects of the production process. The WashStation has an optional chemical dosing pump, allowing chemicals to be added automatically, eliminating any risk of caustic chemicals either on the skin or in the air.

The Results

Cleaning times were slashed from 45 minutes to approximately 5 minutes per IBC (reducing overall cleaning times for cleaning 20 x IBC from 15hrs to 1.5 hrs)
