Spray Balls

Alfa Laval Static Spray Balls

Spray balls are essential components for cleaning tanks and vessels, including fermentation tanks, mixing vessels and CIP (clean-in-place) tanks. They are available in two types: thin-walled and thick-walled, each designed for different cleaning requirements.

A simple, cost effective option, our standard Thin-Walled Static Spray Balls offer a good general wetting of internal surfaces within small to medium sized vessels, where a product is easy to remove/water-soluble.

For vessels that need to pass Riboflavin testing, our range of Thick-Walled Target Drilled Mushroom Spray balls offers a targeted approach to cleaning up into inlet nozzles, manways and potential shadow areas within the vessel. The thick-walled construction allows the individually drilled holes to act as jets providing greater impact, compared to a standard Static Spray Ball with a thin-walled construction.

Types of Static Spray Balls We Provide

Thick Walled Mushroom Spray Ball

Thick-Walled Mushroom Spray Balls

Target Drilled Thick -Walled Spray Balls have bespoke spray patterns, with no two the same. Based on vessel dimensions, existing flow rates and pressures, targeted clusters and fill-in spray patterns are calculated to ensure correct number, size and hole angles are drilled to guarantee the vessel passes Riboflavin testing.

Available in Stainless Steel, Hastelloy, PTFE. (Additional materials on request)

  • Improved internal and external surface finish of 0.38umRa or better
  • Electropolished

Thin-Walled Static Spray Balls

The Thin-walled Static Spray Ball is the simplest spray head technology that can be used to achieve a basic rinse of the internal surfaces of a tank. The balls are manufactured in diameters ranging from 20mm to 120mm and with spray patterns available in standard 360º and 180º up and down as well as horizontal.

Benefits

  • Standard flow rates
  • Inlet connection : Clip on / threaded / weld on
  • External Surface Finish : 0.8umRa
  • Maintenance free

Alfa Laval LKRK Spray Ball

The Alfa Laval LKRK is a Static Spray Ball for hygienic and industrial applications, removing simple residuals from various tanks, such as storage, mixing and cleaning-in-place (CIP) tanks. It is designed to clean tanks with capacities from 5-75 m3. The Static Spray Ball, uses a high flow rate and low pressure to clean the internals of the tank.

The Alfa Laval LKRK is designed to offer good wetting to the internal surfaces of the tank. Available options : 64mm or 94mm Diameter with 1″ or 2″ inlet connection

Benefits

  • Maintenance free
  • 316L Stainless Steel
  • Suitable for Less demanding duties

Special Fabrications of Spray Ball

inTank design and fabricate special dip-pipe assemblies, retractables, removable lances and spray ball manifolds to ensure the cleaning heads are positioned in the optimal cleaning position within the vessel. From a standard dip pipe assembly to a more advanced solution to suit vessels with hard to clean areas with limited access.

Our special fabrications are available in a range of materials, Stainless Steel, Hastelloy, PTFE, (others on request) and surface finishes to suit individual requirements. Full 3.1 Traceability documentation on request.

Simple, Reliable, and Effective Tank Cleaning

Spray balls are a simple yet highly effective tank cleaning solution. When pressurised water flows through the spray ball, it creates an omni-directional pattern of fluid jets that hit the tank walls, spread out, and cascade downwards. Their lack of moving parts makes them exceptionally reliable and virtually maintenance-free, while their affordability makes them a cost-effective choice for cleaning small to medium-sized process vessels. While rotary spray cleaners offer more mechanical action for heavy residues, static spray balls remain a valuable tool for light-duty cleaning, quick rinse-down cycles, and applications where rotating equipment may not be suitable or safe.

Mushroom Spray Balls

The benefits of a thick walled Static Spray Ball include:

  • Improved jet definition
  • Thick walled balls can be target drilled to guarantee a pass on a Riboflavin coverage test of the tank
  • As the balls are manufactured individually, they can be designed with any spray pattern design and flow and pressure requirement
  • Thick walled balls can also be fitted with Misting Nozzles to wash fragile Bursting Disks in Pharmaceutical Vent Lines etc. without damaging them

3 bar, as the extra 3-4mm wall thickness acts as a nozzle and the added strength allows for higher pressure than a thin-walled spray ball.

Thick walled Static Spray Balls are often used in place in other cleaning head technology when:

  • When vessels need to pass Riboflavin testing
  • If flow/pressures are limited

Answers will be required to the following questions in order to size a Static Spray Ball:

  • Is the product easy to remove/water soluble?
  • What is the diameter and height of the tank?
  • Does the vessel need to pass Riboflavin testing?
  • What is the current flow rate and pressure at the spray ball?

A CAD drawing is also required to confirm nozzle positions, manway details and vessel dimensions.

Spray balls distribute cleaning fluid in an omni-directional pattern, wetting the entire tank interior. The jets create a cascading effect, ensuring thorough rinsing of surfaces. They are commonly used in CIP systems due to their simplicity, reliability, and ability to provide full coverage quickly.
